ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hon. (Comrade) Joseph Iranola Akinlaja, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recognizing key figures in Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement—particularly the late Chief Frank Ovie Kokori—during the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Akinlaja—who also served as the General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG)—described the President’s gestures as timely and deeply symbolic, especially for those who made immense sacrifices for Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Akinlaja lauded President Tinubu for reaffirming his administration’s commitment to multiparty democracy and for dispelling concerns over the possibility of a one-party state. He specifically praised the President’s tributes to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and his recognition of other democratic icons, including Kudirat Abiola, Chief Frank Kokori, Alfred Rewane, Anthony Enahoro, and Pa Abraham Adesanya.
“Mr. President’s actions affirm that the legacy of the 1993 electoral process remains a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s enduring democratic spirit. By honouring our democratic icons, he has etched his name in gold,” Akinlaja stated.
He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in governance and urged citizens to actively engage in democratic processes at all levels.
“One of the cardinal principles of democracy is openness and transparency. Those in authority must conduct their activities with honesty and integrity at all times,” he added.
Reflecting on the pivotal role played by the late Chief Kokori in the June 12 struggle, Akinlaja described him as both a mentor and a symbol of resilience. He recalled how Kokori was unjustly detained by the military for championing the cause of democracy.
“When Frank Kokori was held in solitary confinement at Bama Prison, I stood in for him in various capacities, advocating for his release despite threats and victimization. His posthumous national honour proves that, no matter how long injustice persists, truth and justice will eventually prevail,” he said.
As Nigeria marks 26 years of uninterrupted constitutional democracy, Akinlaja urged the nation not to forget the sacrifices made during the dark days of military rule. He emphasized that remembering the past is essential to safeguarding the future of democracy.
He also appealed to President Tinubu to extend recognition to other living contributors to the pro-democracy movement who are yet to be honoured.
“Many once mocked us, saying those who fought for democracy had been forgotten. But today, Mr. President has changed that narrative. I appeal that others still living, who made significant contributions to the democratic cause, also be acknowledged,” Akinlaja urged.
Concluding his statement, Akinlaja encouraged Nigerians to promote peace, unity, and mutual respect as pillars of a stronger and more prosperous democracy.
“Chief Kokori truly deserved this honour. He was an arrowhead of the June 12 struggle and a true hero of democracy. May his gentle soul continue to rest in perfect peace.”
