Ondo State, Nigeria – Hon. Joseph Iranola Akinlaja, a revered statesman, labour icon, entrepreneur, and community leader, marks his 75th birthday today. His life journey, spanning over seven decades, stands as a shining example of dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Hon. Akinlaja served with distinction as a two-term Member of the House of Representatives, representing the Ondo East and West Federal Constituency from 2011 to 2019. During his tenure, he was instrumental in shaping impactful legislation and championing grassroots development initiatives that significantly improved the lives of his constituents.

A Pillar in Nigeria’s Labour Movement

Before his entry into elective politics, Hon. Akinlaja was a formidable force in Nigeria’s labour movement. He served as Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and was formerly the Secretary General of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). Throughout his labour career, he remained a fearless advocate for workers’ rights and a trusted ally of the legendary labour leader, Comrade Frank Kokori.

Political Leadership and Party Building

In the political arena, Hon. Akinlaja also played a key leadership role as the Ondo State Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party. He worked closely with progressive leaders, including His Excellency, Dr. Olusegun Rahman Mimiko, former Governor of Ondo State, to promote people-oriented governance and political inclusiveness.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment

Beyond politics and labour activism, Hon. Akinlaja is a successful entrepreneur. He is the Chairman and Founder of the Akiavic Group, which includes Akiavic Hotel, Akiavic Oil and Gas, and Akiavic Farms. Through these enterprises, he has created numerous employment opportunities and contributed to the economic growth of Ondo State.

Renowned for his generosity and commitment to human empowerment, Hon. Akinlaja has uplifted countless lives. Many of his former aides and extended family members have gone on to achieve remarkable success — some now living abroad, owning homes and thriving businesses — all through his steadfast support during and beyond his time in office.

Even in retirement, Hon. Akinlaja continues to serve. He currently leads as the Coordinator of the Ondo Central Community Property Protection and Anti-Land Grabbing Task Force, a crucial initiative dedicated to safeguarding land rights and protecting communities from criminal encroachment.
