Renowned international surgeon and recipient of the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Award, Dr. Felix Kehinde (DFK), has emphasized the powerful impact of combining medicine with meaningful political engagement. According to him, when medical professionals extend their expertise into the realm of politics, it often results in unprecedented growth and development in society.
Dr. Kehinde, who has made significant contributions to healthcare both in Nigeria and abroad, stated that doctors naturally prioritize healthy living and sound minds—two critical ingredients for a progressive society. He cited the example of former Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, whose medical background helped drive transformative changes during his eight-year tenure.
“A sound mind will always produce positive and impactful outcomes in any society,” said DFK, while reflecting on how the people of Ondo State embraced Dr. Mimiko’s visionary agenda.
He highlighted several of Mimiko’s achievements, including:
- Free shuttle buses for students across the state
- Rapid response ambulances stationed at accident-prone inter-local government roads for emergency care
- Strategic waste bin distribution, which helped make Akure, the state capital, one of the cleanest cities in Nigeria—earning it the title of the second-best city in the country.
As a practicing lead surgeon in the United Kingdom, Dr. Kehinde was honored with the Queen Elizabeth Award for his remarkable efforts in reducing COVID-19 infections and fatalities. His work during the pandemic reflected the deep compassion and commitment that medical doctors bring to public service.
Dr. Kehinde strongly believes that when doctors engage in politics, their concern for human life and public well-being naturally translates into impactful leadership and sustainable development.
During a recent visit to Nigeria, Dr. Kehinde paid a courtesy call to the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, His Imperial Majesty Oba Victor Kiladejo Ademefun Jilo III, and other dignitaries in Ondo State. He also donated medical equipment and materials to the state’s medical university, continuing his tradition of giving back to his roots.
Dr. Felix Kehinde was formerly the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ondo East and West Federal Constituency in the 2023 General Elections. He has since joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and remains committed to contributing meaningfully to both political and societal development whenever the opportunity arises.
